How to Parallel Lithium Batteries Safely

Direct answer

Parallel only identical packs: same voltage (48V), same Ah, same BMS brand/protocol. Connect all positives to one busbar and all negatives to another, with cable lengths equal to balance current. Size the busbar for total current (e.g. 3 × 100Ah racks at 1C = 15kW = 300A at 48V). Never parallel different capacities or chemistries.

Steps

  1. Confirm all packs are 48V nominal, same Ah, same BMS protocol.
  2. Pre-charge each pack to within 0.1V before connecting.
  3. Use equal-length cables from each pack to the busbar (balanced current sharing).
  4. Size the busbar and fuse for total current (N+1 safety margin).
  5. Set the inverter to recognize the combined BMS via CAN/RS485.

What not to do

  • Mix a 100Ah with a 200Ah pack . the smaller hits cutoff first.
  • Series-connect without a communication BMS . cells drift apart.
  • Skip the fuse . a short on the busbar is a fire.

Can I parallel different capacity LiFePO4 batteries?

Only if they share the same voltage, chemistry, and BMS protocol . and even then, match capacities. Mixing a 100Ah and 200Ah pack in parallel causes the smaller one to hit cutoff first and the BMS to fight. Keep all parallel packs identical (same Ah, same brand BMS) and use a busbar sized for the total current.
