What Is a BMS in a Lithium Battery?

The BMS (Battery Management System) is the circuit board that keeps a LiFePO4 pack safe and balanced. It cuts off at over-charge (3.65V/cell), over-discharge (2.5V), over-current, and over-temperature, balances the 16 cells, and talks to the inverter via CAN or RS485. Skip the BMS and the pack becomes a fire and warranty risk.
What it protects
- Over-charge: stops at 3.65V/cell to prevent venting.
- Over-discharge: disconnects at 2.5V/cell to avoid permanent damage.
- Over-current / short: trips within milliseconds.
- Temperature: cuts charge above 55°C, discharge below -20°C.
Balancing and communication
