Battery + Inverter Pairing: How to Match an Off-Grid Storage System
Many buyers purchase the battery and inverter separately, then find on site that they will not connect: voltage mismatch, no communication, inverter trips when the pump starts. These three are not bought independently — they are one system.
1. Voltage must match — this is the floor
Our 48V hybrid inverters (3.6kW / 6kW / 12kW) pair with 48V or 51.2V LiFePO4. 51.2V is the full-charge voltage of a 16-cell pack and is still classified as a 48V system — fine.
Connect a 48V inverter to a 24V battery and the inverter protection will not even start; force it and you burn the unit. Confirm the battery nominal voltage before ordering, not just the amp-hour rating. All our wall-mounted, rack-mounted, and stackable units are 51.2V and match 48V inverters directly.
2. Inverter power looks at "simultaneous start", not "total"
A pump or fridge compressor pulls 3-5x its rated watts at startup. Daily load may total only 1.5kW, but a 750W pump surging to 3kW plus a 150W fridge at 600W spikes to 3.6kW instantly.
We recommend continuous inverter power at least 1.5x your daily peak load. That setup fits a 3.6kW inverter; add a 1.5kW heater running at the same time and you need 6kW. Undersize it and the system is not broken — the inverter just trips on pump startup and the customer thinks it is faulty.
| Scenario | Peak load | Recommended inverter | Battery |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rural home (with pump) | 3.6kW | 3.6kW | 5-10kWh |
| Home + electric heating | 5kW | 6kW | 15kWh |
| Small farm / shop | 10kW | 12kW | 30kWh+ |
3. Mismatched communication protocol — battery level goes unread
The inverter reads battery state of charge, temperature, and charge/discharge status via CAN or RS485. Mismatch means it estimates by voltage alone: low winter voltage falsely triggers low-voltage cutoff and switches to generator; high summer voltage falsely triggers overcharge and stops charging early.
Our batteries and inverters both carry CAN/RS485; wire and set the dip switches correctly and you see every cell voltage on the screen. Customers who mix brands hit this wall eight times out of ten — and it is not something we can debug remotely. Buy the set from one supplier.
4. Replacing only the battery? Check the charge profile first
Swapping lead-acid for LiFePO4 to cut maintenance is fine if voltage and protocol match. But an old inverter tuned for lead-acid (higher constant-voltage and float stages) will under-charge or over-charge the new pack.
We have seen customers connect a lead-acid inverter to LiFePO4 and swell the battery in three months. In that case, replace the inverter first — do not cut corners.
5. Pairing checklist (48V system)
- Battery: 51.2V LiFePO4, capacity from load (sizing guide)
- Inverter: 48V hybrid, continuous power ≥ peak load × 1.5
- Solar array: off-grid, size to daily load ÷ local effective sunlight, add generator backup for winter
- Cabling: battery-to-inverter ≥ 35mm² copper, short run for low drop
- Comms: CAN/RS485 twisted pair, run separate from mains
Tired of matching it yourself? Take our all-in-one unit — inverter and battery pre-wired at the factory, you just connect panels and load. No voltage or protocol mismatch possible.
