The Grade B Scam by the Numbers

Grade A cells come from the manufacturer's main production line. They pass every QC gate and ship with QR codes, batch numbers, and test data. The manufacturer — EVE, CATL, REPT, Gotion — sells them directly or through authorized distributors.
Grade B cells come from three sources: (1) cells that marginally failed one QC parameter at the factory, (2) overrun cells from contract manufacturing that the brand refuses, (3) recycled cells stripped from used EV battery packs. Source 3 is the most common scam — cells with 500-1,000 cycles already on them, resold as "new."
5-Step Verification Process
Step 1: Read the QR Code and Batch Number
Every Grade A cell from a tier-1 manufacturer carries a laser-etched QR code and alphanumeric batch number. Scan with a phone app — EVE, CATL, and REPT maintain databases that return the production date, factory line number, and original capacity test result.
Red flags: QR codes on stickers (not laser-etched), QR codes that scan to a generic WeChat page instead of the manufacturer database, batch numbers that are sequential or repetitive across different cells, and cells sold as "Grade A EVE" with the QR code ground off.
Step 2: Measure Voltage Consistency
Use a Fluke 17B+ or similar digital multimeter (accuracy ±0.5%). Test every cell in the batch. Record the voltage of each cell.
- Grade A batch: Voltage spread ≤0.03V. Example: 3.291V to 3.318V across 100 cells
- Suspicious batch: Spread 0.05-0.10V. Mixed production dates, mixed batches
- Reject: Spread >0.10V. Cells have been cycled or are from different manufacturers
Step 3: Capacity Test
Equipment needed: EBC-A40L or ZKE Tech capacity tester ($80-$150). Procedure:
- Charge to 3.65V at 0.5C until current drops below 0.05C
- Rest 10 minutes
- Discharge to 2.50V at 0.5C
- Record discharged Ah
For a 280Ah-rated cell: Grade A delivers 274-280Ah (≥98%). Grade A-: 266-274Ah (95-98%). Grade B: 252-266Ah (90-95%). Anything below 252Ah? You received used, defective, or mislabeled cells.
Step 4: Internal Resistance (IR) Test
Use a YR1035+ 4-wire AC IR meter (~$40). Measure at the same state of charge — ideally 50% SOC. Temperature affects readings; test at 20-25°C.
For 280Ah prismatic cells: Grade A ≤0.25mΩ, A- ≤0.30mΩ, B ≤0.50mΩ. IR above 0.50mΩ means high internal degradation. These cells self-discharge faster and generate more heat under load.

Inspect every cell visually before accepting a shipment. Look for:
- Swelling: Place cell on a flat surface. Any gap over 0.5mm between casing and surface = internal gas buildup. These cells are a fire risk
- Terminal damage: Stripped threads, bent terminals, weld spatter on contact surfaces
- Casing defects: Dents deeper than 1mm compromise the aluminum shell integrity
- Insulation damage: Torn blue wrapping, exposed metal at edges
